Preserving Independence in the Home |
Personal Home Solutions is pleased to present a sampling of past projects. Our online portfolio is limited to ensure our client's privacy. |
BEFORE - This client’s rear deck was failing, dangerous, and no longer suited the client's needs. Wheelchair access into the home was now required. The living floor of this raised ranch was over 60" above grade. Ramping to such a high elevation would require a significantly long ramp, over 60'! |
AFTER - The solution, replace the failing structure with a new deck properly designed to meet the clients needs, use low-maintenance composite materials, increase the height of the deck to make it level with the living floor, and install a new platform lift (in this case a lift is far more useful to the client and caregiver, and is actually more aesthetically pleasing than a very long ramp.) The result, easy and safe access, minimal maintenance, and a beautifull deck to be enjoyed by everyone. |
BEFORE - This client’s rear entryway was difficult and hazardous to utilize. There were no handrails, no landing platform, and the risers were unequal (first step - shallow 5”, second step -steep 10”). The interior floor elevation was also being raised and needed to be accommodated. |
AFTER - The solution, create consistent stair risers and incorporate handrails, landing platform, a shallow threshold, and a small seating area for the client. The result, improved safety, comfort, and accessibility. Plus, structural provisions and layout space for future a ramp if needed. |
BEFORE - This client’s porch was 9” lower than the rest of the home. The laundry facilities, storage, a seating area, and the primary rear exit from the house were all difficult to utilize. |
AFTER - The solution, raise the floor to match the kitchen floor elevation thereby improving safety, comfort, and accessibility. The result, true single floor living and a space the client can once again enjoy. |
BEFORE - This client’s bathroom was very narrow, original to the home, and not very safe or accessible. The 3 doors are to the basement (28” wide), to the bathroom (26” wide), and to a closet (this third door could not be moved because of the concealed chimney directly to the right). Plus, the bathroom threshold was over 1/4” and presented a tripping hazard. |
AFTER - The solution, widen the bathroom door and the room overall. The doorways were reframed while maintaining the overall length of the wall. The basement doorway was narrowed and the bathroom door increased to 32” wide. The threshold was minimized and lever door hardware was utilized. Same space, greater access into a key room. |
BEFORE - This client’s bathroom was very narrow, original to the home, and not very safe or accessible. Vanity area - there was no toe space, the sink was deep from front to back, the faucet was non-lever style, and the vanity projected into the room further impacting the already narrow space. |
AFTER - The solution, widen the bathroom, replace the vanity with cabinets, drawers and toe space. Utilize a one-piece counter/sink for easier cleaning. The depth of the vanity is also shallower, along with placing a new medicine cabinet lower on the wall. The client can now reach items much easier. A new 3-lamp wall sconce fixture greatly improves lighting in this area and a new GFI receptacle adjacent to the sink for safety and convenience. |
BEFORE - This client’s bathroom was very narrow, original to the home and not very safe or accessible overall. Toileting area - the space was very narrow with limited space in front due to the minimal width of the room and the projecting vanity. The single grab bar was also inadequate. A very difficult space to access. |
AFTER - The solution, widen the bathroom, replace the toilet with a modern, smaller profile, power-flush type, and remove a portion of the wall to improve accessibility and overall openness. The grab bars were located specifically to meet this client's personal needs and preference. |
BEFORE - This client’s bathroom was very narrow, original to the home and not very safe or accessible overall. Bathing area - the grab bars were improperly placed, the tub wall was very high to step over, and the shelving was limited and flimsy. |
AFTER - The solution, widen the bathroom, replace the tub with a shallower tub wall height, provide properly located grab bars, provide a shower wall system with integrated shelving. In addition, the bathroom was updated with new wainscoating, wallpaper, paint, floor, exhaust, and lighting. |
BEFORE - Unfortunately we do not have any before pictures of this closet. This client’s bedroom closet utilized sliding doors, was only 4 feet wide, had a single rod which was too high for the client, and a single top shelf that was inaccessible. Sliding doors do not project into a room, but they do not offer full open access into the space. This was not a usable closet for the client. |
AFTER - The solution, utilize some space from the adjacent bedroom and increase the width of the closet, change the doors to swing-clear bi-fold type offering full open access, provide a completely adjustable closet system. The back wall is framed to allow complete adjustment of the vertical supports, and all brackets, shelves and rods. The end walls have just the right amount of cedar to preserve the clothing while offering a nice complimenting aroma. The result, a fully accessible closet that can change according to the client’s needs and desires. |
